Your domain name is on every link, email address and business card, and changing it later is a painful migration. A few minutes of careful thought up front saves years of hassle. Here’s what actually matters, and what matters less than people think.

Brandable beats keyword-stuffed

Exact-match domains (best-cheap-vps-hosting.com) once gave a ranking boost. Today they give very little, and often look spammy. A short, brandable name is easier to remember, easier to say, and can grow with the business.

Style Example Pros Cons
Brandable word stripe.com Memorable, flexible Harder to find available
Compound mailchimp.com Descriptive but unique Can get long
Keyword + brand acmehosting.com Hints at the service Limits future expansion
Exact-match keywords cheap-vps-deals.net — Spammy, low trust

The radio test

Say the name out loud to someone. Can they type it correctly without help?

  • Short: ideally under 15 characters.
  • No hyphens (people forget them) and no numbers (is it “4” or “four”?).
  • No ambiguous spelling (doubled letters across word boundaries: expertsexchange).
  • Easy to pronounce in the languages your customers speak.

Choosing a TLD

TLD When
.com Default for international businesses; most trusted
Country codes (.de, .jp, .co.uk) Business focused on one country; strong local signal
.io, .dev, .app, .ai Tech products (.dev and .app require HTTPS, via HSTS preload)
.org Non-profits and communities
New gTLDs (.shop, .cloud, .tech) When the .com is taken; check pricing and reputation

Search engines treat generic TLDs equally for ranking. Country-code TLDs signal that country. Some cheap new TLDs have a spam reputation that can hurt email deliverability. Also check renewal prices: some domains are cheap the first year and expensive after.

Check before you buy

  1. Trademarks: search your country’s trademark database (and WIPO / EUIPO / USPTO for international). Using someone else’s mark invites legal problems and domain disputes.
  2. Social handles: are the same names free on the platforms you need?
  3. History: check the Wayback Machine (web.archive.org) for a previously used domain. A domain with a spam past can carry penalties or blocklisting.
  4. Similar names: a competitor with a near-identical name causes confusion and misdirected email.

Registering it

  • Use a reputable registrar with clear renewal pricing, free WHOIS privacy, two-factor authentication, and DNSSEC support.
  • Register in your own name or company, never in a developer’s or agency’s account.
  • Turn on auto-renew, and keep the payment method current. Expired domains get snapped up.
  • Enable registrar lock (transfer lock).
  • Consider registering common typos and your main country TLD, and redirect them with 301s. See 301 vs 302 redirects.

Registrar vs DNS vs hosting

These are three separate things, which can live with different providers:

Layer What it does
Registrar You own and renew the domain there
DNS hosting Answers queries (A, AAAA, MX, TXT records): registrar, Cloudflare, etc.
Web hosting The VPS or server your A record points to

Keeping them separate means a hosting change only requires a DNS update. See DNS records explained and pointing a domain to a VPS.

Email on your domain

A professional address ([email protected]) builds trust. Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC from day one, even if you only send email through a third-party service. See email on your own domain and SPF, DKIM and DMARC.

Security

  • 2FA on the registrar account, and a unique password.
  • DNSSEC where your DNS provider supports it. See DNSSEC.
  • CAA records to limit which certificate authorities can issue certificates for your domain.
  • Monitor expiry dates for all your domains, including the ones you only use for redirects.

Changing domains later

It’s possible, but it’s a full migration: 301 redirects for every URL, Search Console’s Change of Address tool, updating links, and keeping the old domain forever. See website migration SEO.
