Picking a VPS location is one of the few hosting decisions that is genuinely hard to change later. Your IP addresses, DNS records, firewall rules and sometimes even your customers’ allow-lists all end up tied to it. The good news: for most projects the right answer becomes obvious once you look at where your users are and what your server needs to do.
This guide compares VPS.DO’s two VPS regions — the USA (Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago and Miami) and Hong Kong — across the factors that actually matter.
The short answer
| If your users or services are mainly in… | Choose |
|---|---|
| North America, Latin America or Europe | USA VPS |
| Mainland China | Hong Kong VPS |
| Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Japan, Korea | Hong Kong VPS (or test both) |
| Everywhere / global audience behind a CDN | USA VPS (Los Angeles) |
Plans and prices are identical in both regions, so cost doesn’t need to factor into the decision.
1. Latency: physics wins
Network latency is mostly determined by distance. Light in fiber travels roughly 200 km per millisecond, and real-world routes are never straight lines. A user in Shanghai reaching a server in Hong Kong crosses around 1,200 km; reaching Los Angeles means crossing the Pacific — more than ten times further.
For a static blog behind a CDN, this barely matters. For anything interactive — APIs, game servers, remote desktops, trading terminals, SSH sessions — every round trip adds up.
Tip: Before you commit, measure. Run
pingormtrfrom a machine near your users to a test IP in each region, and compare the averages and the variance. A stable 60 ms often feels better than a jittery 40 ms.
2. Reaching users in mainland China
This is where Hong Kong shines. VPS.DO’s Hong Kong VPS uses CN2 + BGP routes, which are optimized for traffic to and from mainland Chinese networks. International routes into China are often congested at peak times; premium CN2 routing avoids much of that.
Hosting in Hong Kong also means no ICP filing is required. Servers inside mainland China need an ICP license before serving websites, which can take weeks. Hong Kong gives you low latency to Chinese users without that process.
If China isn’t part of your audience, this advantage doesn’t apply — and the USA’s bigger bandwidth allowance (below) will likely serve you better.
3. Bandwidth model
The two regions bill network capacity differently:
- USA VPS — a 1 Gbps port with a monthly transfer allowance (from 1 TB on the smallest plan up to 10 TB). Great for bursty traffic, downloads and large files.
- Hong Kong VPS — an unmetered port measured in Mbps (from 2 Mbps up to 20 Mbps on CN2). You never run out of transfer, but sustained throughput is capped by the port speed.
Rule of thumb: if you move a lot of data quickly (backups, media, package mirrors), the USA’s 1 Gbps port is the better fit. If you need steady, high-quality connectivity to China for an app or website, Hong Kong’s CN2 port is worth more than raw speed.
4. Email and reverse DNS
If your server sends email directly, check this before ordering:
- On USA VPS, outbound mail ports (25, 465, 587) are open for legitimate use, and you can set custom rDNS (PTR) records — essential for mail deliverability.
- On Hong Kong VPS, outbound mail ports are restricted and rDNS is not available, to prevent spam.

5. Choosing a city in the USA
Within the USA you pick a city at checkout, at the same price:
- Los Angeles — the best all-rounder for Asia-Pacific and West Coast users, and popular for gaming.
- New York City — East Coast, Europe-facing services and finance workloads such as Forex VPS.
- Chicago — central US coverage with balanced latency to both coasts.
- Miami — the gateway to Latin America and the Southeast US.
Still not sure?
Every VPS.DO plan has a 7-day money-back guarantee, so the lowest-risk approach is to deploy where you think is right, run your real workload for a few days, and measure. If the numbers disappoint, request a refund and try the other region.
