Of all the choices when buying a VPS, location is the one you can’t fix later by upgrading. CPU and RAM can grow; the distance between your server and your users can’t shrink. Here’s how to choose well.
1. Start with where your users are
Every network round trip takes time, and a typical web page needs several: DNS, TCP handshake, TLS handshake, the HTML, then assets. Light in fibre covers about 200 km per millisecond, and real routes are longer than straight lines. Rough round-trip times:
| From → To | Typical RTT |
|---|---|
| Same city / region | 1–10 ms |
| US East ↔ US West | 60–80 ms |
| US West ↔ Japan / Hong Kong | 100–160 ms |
| Europe ↔ East Asia | 180–280 ms |
| Hong Kong ↔ mainland China (good routes) | 10–40 ms |
| Tokyo ↔ Seoul / Taipei / Shanghai | 30–60 ms |
Rule of thumb: put the server where most of your users — or the services you call — are. A CDN can cache static files worldwide, but dynamic requests, APIs, logins and checkouts still go to your server.
2. Consider what the server talks to
Sometimes the server’s most important connection isn’t to users:
- Trading platforms: close to your broker’s servers — see forex VPS.
- APIs and AI services: some providers restrict access by region; check availability before choosing.
- Databases and other servers: keep app and database in the same location.
- Game servers: as central to your players as possible.
3. Network quality and routes
The same distance can feel very different depending on the network:
- Peering and transit: well-connected networks reach major ISPs directly, avoiding detours.
- Routes into mainland China are a special case. Standard international routes are often congested at peak times. Premium routes such as CN2 GIA offer much more stable latency and lower packet loss. See CN2 GIA explained and why CN2 matters for Hong Kong VPS.
- Peak-hour behaviour: test in the evening of your users’ time zone, not just in the morning.
4. Legal, compliance and practical factors
- Data protection rules may require data about certain users to stay in a region.
- Content and licensing: hosting in mainland China requires an ICP licence; Hong Kong, Japan and the USA don’t.
- Local services: payment gateways, banks or government APIs may only accept connections from certain countries.
- IP geolocation: your server’s IP location affects which content versions, languages and ads it receives — relevant for SEO tools and scraping.
5. Common choices
| Audience | Good locations |
|---|---|
| United States, Canada | US West (Los Angeles), Central (Chicago), East (New York) |
| Latin America | Miami |
| Mainland China | Hong Kong with CN2 routes; Tokyo with CN2 GIA |
| Japan, Korea, Taiwan | Tokyo |
| Southeast Asia | Singapore, Hong Kong |
| Global audience | One central location + CDN, or several regions |

6. Test before you buy
Don’t rely on maps or marketing claims — measure from where your users are:
ping -c 20 TEST_IP
mtr -rwc 100 TEST_IP
Ask colleagues or customers in the target region to run the same tests, or use online looking-glass and ping tools with probes worldwide. Look at average latency, jitter and packet loss, ideally at peak hours. See ping, traceroute and mtr.
7. When one location isn’t enough
- CDN for static assets and cacheable pages — cheap and effective.
- Multiple servers in different regions with geo-DNS for truly global apps — more complex (data synchronisation). See high availability and multi-region design.
- Edge proxies: a small VPS near users can terminate TLS and forward to the main server over a good route.
Our locations
VPS.DO offers KVM VPS in:
