cPanel/WHM is the best-known hosting control panel, but its licence cost per account adds up, and it’s heavier than many VPS owners need. Plenty of alternatives manage websites, databases, SSL, email and DNS on a VPS, many of them free. Here’s how they compare, and how to choose.
Quick comparison
| Panel | Cost | Web server | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HestiaCP | Free | Nginx + Apache or Nginx + PHP-FPM | Yes (Exim, Dovecot) | All-round free cPanel replacement |
| CloudPanel | Free | Nginx + PHP-FPM | No | Fast PHP and WordPress hosting, Node.js and Python apps |
| aaPanel | Free (paid extras) | Nginx/Apache/OpenLiteSpeed | Plugin | One-click app installs, GUI-heavy users |
| CyberPanel | Free (paid add-ons) | OpenLiteSpeed / LiteSpeed | Yes | WordPress with LiteSpeed Cache |
| Webmin / Virtualmin | Free (Pro paid) | Apache/Nginx | Yes | Admins who want control of every service |
| ISPConfig | Free | Apache/Nginx | Yes | Multi-server setups, hosting providers |
| Plesk | Paid | Nginx + Apache | Yes | Polished commercial alternative; Windows support |
| DirectAdmin | Paid (cheaper than cPanel) | Apache/Nginx/OpenLiteSpeed | Yes | Lightweight commercial panel for resellers |
| RunCloud, SpinupWP, Ploi, GridPane | Paid SaaS | Nginx (configured on your VPS) | No | Agencies managing many servers from one dashboard |
Free panels in more detail
HestiaCP: a fork of VestaCP with active development. It covers web, DNS, mail, databases, Let’s Encrypt, backups and multiple users. It’s light enough for a 1–2 GB VPS. Install on a fresh Debian or Ubuntu server.
CloudPanel: modern and fast, focused on PHP sites (WordPress, Laravel), Node.js, Python and static sites, with Nginx and per-site isolation. It has no email server, so pair it with a mail provider or SMTP service.
aaPanel: a GUI with an app store (stacks, databases, Docker, security tools). Convenient, but review what you install, and keep the panel port protected.
CyberPanel: built around OpenLiteSpeed, and a good match for WordPress with the LiteSpeed Cache plugin. See LiteSpeed Cache for WordPress and install OpenLiteSpeed.
Webmin/Virtualmin: very powerful, and exposes every system service. The interface is dense, but nothing is hidden.
Commercial options
- Plesk: polished UI, a WordPress Toolkit, extensions, Linux and Windows. Licensed per server, with tiers by number of domains.
- DirectAdmin: fast and stable, popular with resellers, licensed by account count.
- cPanel/WHM itself remains a solid choice when clients expect it. See install cPanel/WHM on a VPS.
No panel at all?
Many VPS users skip panels: Nginx server blocks, Certbot and a few scripts are lighter, more secure (no panel to attack), and fully transparent. For Docker-based apps, a PaaS like Coolify or Dokploy fills a similar role. See Nginx server blocks and Coolify.
How to choose
| If you… | Consider |
|---|---|
| Want a free, full replacement including email | HestiaCP |
| Host mainly WordPress/PHP and use external email | CloudPanel |
| Want LiteSpeed performance for WordPress | CyberPanel |
| Resell hosting to clients | DirectAdmin, Plesk, cPanel |
| Manage many servers for an agency | RunCloud / SpinupWP / Ploi / GridPane |
| Prefer full control and minimal attack surface | No panel |
Security tips for any panel
- Install on a fresh server. Most panels take over the web, mail and DNS configuration.
- Restrict the panel port to your IP or VPN, or at least enable 2FA. See Tailscale.
- Keep the panel updated. Panels are popular attack targets.
- Still keep off-site backups independent of the panel. See off-site VPS backups.
