For web design and development agencies, hosting client sites can be a steady, recurring revenue stream, or a constant source of support headaches. Moving client sites from scattered shared hosting accounts to VPS servers you control gives you consistent performance, standard tooling, and the ability to sell care plans (updates, backups, monitoring) with confidence.

Why agencies move to VPS hosting

  • Performance you control: no noisy neighbours eating a shared server’s CPU.
  • One standard stack for all clients: the same PHP versions, caching, backups and monitoring.
  • Faster support: SSH, WP-CLI and logs, instead of waiting on a shared host’s ticket queue.
  • Margin: fixed server costs, spread over many client sites.

How many sites per server?

Approach Pros Cons
Many sites on one larger VPS Cost-efficient; one place to manage One problem can affect many clients; plan isolation carefully
One VPS per large client Full isolation; easy to bill and hand over More servers to maintain
Mixed (shared servers for small sites, dedicated VPS for big ones) Balance of cost and isolation Needs good tooling and documentation

A 4 vCPU / 8 GB VPS with page caching comfortably hosts dozens of small brochure sites. WooCommerce stores and busy sites deserve their own server. See WooCommerce VPS requirements.

Isolation per site (important)

When many client sites share a server, isolate them, so one hacked plugin doesn’t compromise every client:

  • a separate Linux user and PHP-FPM pool per site;
  • separate databases and database users per site;
  • correct file ownership and permissions. See WordPress file permissions;
  • per-site resource limits (PHP-FPM pm.max_children, and optionally cgroups).

Control panels do much of this automatically.

Control panels and management tools

Tool Type Notes
CloudPanel, HestiaCP, aaPanel Free panels Sites, PHP versions, databases, SSL
RunCloud, SpinupWP, Ploi, GridPane SaaS server managers (paid) Connect your VPS; WordPress-focused features
cPanel/WHM, Plesk Commercial panels Familiar to clients; licence costs per server or account
Coolify, Dokploy Self-hosted PaaS Good for agencies deploying custom apps

See cPanel/WHM on a VPS and Coolify.

The services that make hosting profitable

  1. Backups: daily, off-site, with retention, and tested restores. See WordPress backup without a plugin.
  2. Updates: WordPress core, plugins and themes, tested on staging first. WP-CLI makes bulk updates scriptable. See update WordPress safely.
  3. Monitoring: uptime, SSL expiry, and domain expiry alerts. See Uptime Kuma.
  4. Security: firewall, Fail2ban, login protection, malware scans. See WordPress hardening.
  5. Performance: caching, CDN setup, Core Web Vitals reports. See WordPress VPS performance tuning.
  6. Staging sites for client review. See WordPress staging site.

Bundle these into tiered care plans. The server cost is usually small compared to the value of the work.

Operational habits

  • Document every site: domain registrar, DNS provider, server, PHP version, database name, backup location, and special plugins.
  • Automate: provisioning scripts or Ansible playbooks, so every server is built the same way. See Ansible.
  • Client access: give clients WordPress admin access, not root. Use SFTP-only accounts where they need file access. See SFTPGo.
  • Offboarding: a documented process to export a client’s site (files and database) when they leave.

Locations for international clients

Host each client’s site close to their audience. For example: USA servers for US businesses, Hong Kong or Tokyo for Asian markets. See choosing a VPS location and USA VPS.

Reselling and affiliates

If you prefer not to resell hosting, you can refer clients to a provider and earn commission instead. See the VPS.DO affiliate program.

Quick reference

Area Recommendation
Small sites Many per VPS, isolated per user/pool
Big sites and stores Own VPS
Management Free panel or SaaS server manager
Revenue Care plans: backups, updates, monitoring, security
Must document DNS, registrar, server, backups per client
