Expert Advisors (EAs) and automated strategies only trade while MetaTrader is running and connected. A home PC sleeps, updates, loses Wi-Fi or power. A Windows VPS keeps MT4 or MT5 running 24/7 in a data center, often much closer to your broker’s servers — which reduces latency and connection drops.
VPS.DO provides hosting infrastructure only and doesn’t offer trading or investment advice. Trading carries risk.
1. Choose the location
Latency to your broker’s trade server matters more than raw specs. Find out where it is (your broker’s documentation, or the server name in MetaTrader), then pick the closest location:
- New York — many US and global brokers (Equinix NY4/NY5 area).
- Tokyo or Hong Kong — Asian brokers.
- Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami — other options in the US.
Our location pages list test IPs you can ping before ordering. Once a terminal is running, MetaTrader’s connection status (bottom right) shows the ping to your broker’s trade server — the number that really matters. If it’s high, a different location may suit your broker better.
2. Choose the size
MetaTrader is light, but Windows Server itself needs resources:
| Setup | RAM | CPU |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 terminals, a few EAs | 2 GB | 1–2 vCPU |
| 3–6 terminals | 4 GB | 2 vCPU |
| Many terminals, heavy EAs, backtesting | 8 GB+ | 4+ vCPU |
Windows Server requires at least 50 GB of disk on our plans. Each terminal also uses disk for history data; heavy tick data can grow.
3. Connect and prepare Windows
Connect with Remote Desktop using the IP and Administrator password from your welcome email — see connecting to a Windows VPS. Then:
- Install Windows updates and reboot (in a quiet period, not during trading hours).
- Change the Administrator password, set an account lockout policy, and protect RDP — see RDP brute-force protection.
- Set the time zone you prefer (MetaTrader uses the broker’s server time regardless).
4. Install MetaTrader
Download MT4 or MT5 from your broker’s website (it’s preconfigured with their servers), install it, and log in with your trading account.
Running several accounts or brokers? Install each terminal into its own folder (the installer lets you change the path, e.g. C:\MT4-BrokerA, C:\MT4-BrokerB). Each copy runs independently. MT5 can also install multiple instances via separate folders.
Copy your EAs, indicators and templates into the terminal’s data folder (File → Open Data Folder → MQL4/MQL5), restart the terminal, attach EAs to charts and enable Algo Trading / AutoTrading.
5. Disconnect — don’t sign out
When you’re done, close the Remote Desktop window (disconnect). Your session — and MetaTrader — keeps running.
Don’t click Sign out / Log off — that closes all programs, including your terminals and EAs.
6. Survive reboots: auto-start and auto-login
Windows updates or maintenance will occasionally reboot the server. To bring terminals back automatically:
- Auto-start the terminals: put shortcuts to each
terminal.exe/terminal64.exein the Startup folder (shell:startup). MetaTrader reopens the charts and EAs from the last session. - Auto-login: programs in the Startup folder run only after a user logs in. Use Microsoft’s Autologon tool (Sysinternals) to log in automatically after boot — it stores the password encrypted. Weigh the convenience against security; the VPS should be well protected.
- Control update reboots: set Windows Update active hours, or schedule updates for the weekend when markets are closed — see Windows Update with PowerShell.
7. Keep it lean and stable
- Don’t browse the web or install unnecessary software on the trading VPS.
- In MetaTrader: reduce Max bars in chart and close unused charts to save memory.
- Exclude MetaTrader folders from real-time antivirus scanning only if you experience performance problems and trust your EAs.
- Watch resources in Task Manager; if memory is consistently above ~80%, upgrade the plan.
8. Monitor from your phone
Use the MetaTrader mobile app to watch positions, and the Remote Desktop app (Windows App) on iOS/Android to check the VPS itself. Push notifications from MetaTrader (Tools → Options → Notifications with your MetaQuotes ID) can alert you to EA events.
9. Back up your setup
Back up the terminal data folders (EAs, settings, templates, profiles) regularly to your own computer or cloud storage, so you can rebuild quickly on another server.
