A Windows VPS is especially handy when you can reach it from anywhere, including your phone. Traders check positions, admins restart services, and anyone can grab a file from a desktop session. Microsoft’s free RDP apps for iOS, iPadOS and Android make this straightforward.

Install a client

  • iPhone / iPad: Windows App (by Microsoft) from the App Store.
  • Android: Remote Desktop (Microsoft) or the newer Windows App from Google Play. Alternatives include aRDP and other FreeRDP-based clients.

Add your VPS

  1. Tap + → Add PC.
  2. PC name: your server’s IP (for example 203.0.113.10), or IP:port if you changed the RDP port. See change the RDP port.
  3. User account: username (for example Administrator, or .\yourname) and password.
  4. Optionally set a friendly name, then save and tap the tile.
  5. Accept the certificate prompt the first time (Windows Server uses a self-signed RDP certificate by default). Check that the IP is yours.

The apps offer two modes, switchable from the session toolbar:

Mode How it works Best for
Mouse pointer Drag a pointer like a trackpad; tap = click Precise clicks in desktop apps and trading terminals
Direct touch Your finger is the mouse Touch-friendly apps, quick taps

Useful gestures (mouse mode): two-finger tap = right-click, two-finger drag = scroll, pinch = zoom.

Keyboard: tap the keyboard icon in the toolbar. For special keys (Ctrl, Alt, Windows, function keys), use the extra key bar. A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse turn an iPad or Android tablet into a decent remote workstation.

Make it smoother on mobile networks

  • Resolution: in the PC’s display settings, choose a lower resolution, or “fit to screen”. Very high resolutions on small screens are hard to use, and send more data.
  • Scaling: increase Windows display scaling for the session, or use the app’s zoom.
  • Turn off wallpaper and visual effects on the server. See slow Remote Desktop.
  • RDP uses relatively little data for mostly static screens, but video and fast-moving charts use more. Watch your mobile data allowance.

Disconnect vs sign out

  • Disconnect (closing the app or tapping disconnect): your session keeps running on the server, so open apps (like a trading terminal) continue.
  • Sign out (Start → user → Sign out): closes the session and all its apps.

For trading and long-running tasks, disconnect, don’t sign out.

Troubleshooting

Problem Fix
Can’t connect Check the IP/port, server firewall, and that the VPS is running. See RDP connection errors
Error 0x204 Port unreachable: wrong port, firewall, or mobile network blocking it
Credentials rejected Username format (.\Administrator), password, keyboard autocorrect/capitalisation
NLA / CredSSP error Update the app and the server. See RDP Network Level Authentication
Works on Wi-Fi, not mobile data (or vice versa) That network blocks the port; try a VPN, or a different port

Security on mobile devices

  • Lock your phone with a strong PIN or biometrics. Saved RDP passwords are only as safe as the device.
  • Prefer connecting through a VPN (WireGuard or Tailscale apps) instead of exposing RDP to the internet. See Tailscale.
  • Restrict RDP by IP where possible, and keep account lockout enabled. See RDP brute-force protection.

Quick reference

Step Action
Client Windows App / Microsoft Remote Desktop
Address IP or IP:port
Precise clicks Mouse pointer mode
Keep apps running Disconnect, don’t sign out
Safer access VPN app + restricted RDP
