You don’t need a Windows PC to use a Windows VPS. On a Mac, Microsoft’s free Windows App (formerly “Microsoft Remote Desktop”) connects to Windows Server over RDP, with good performance, multi-monitor support, clipboard sync and folder sharing.

1. Install the client

Install Windows App from the Mac App Store (search “Windows App” by Microsoft). Older Macs may still have “Microsoft Remote Desktop”, which works the same way.

2. Add your VPS

  1. Open Windows App → + → Add PC.
  2. PC name: your server’s IP address (for example 203.0.113.10), or 203.0.113.10:53389 if you changed the RDP port. See change the RDP port.
  3. Credentials: add a user account, with the username as Administrator (or your own user) and the password from your VPS welcome email or setup.
  4. Friendly name: for example “Trading VPS”.
  5. Save, and double-click the tile to connect.

On the first connection, you’ll see a certificate warning: Windows Server uses a self-signed RDP certificate by default. Verify that the IP is yours, then click Continue (or “Show Certificate → Always trust”).

3. Display settings for Macs

Retina displays have very high resolutions, which can make the remote desktop tiny or slow:

  • Edit the PC → Display: choose a fixed resolution (for example 1920×1080), or “Default for this display” with “Optimize for Retina displays” turned off on slower connections.
  • Use all monitors: for multi-monitor setups (uses more bandwidth).
  • Start session in full screen, or windowed.

4. Keyboard and mouse

Windows action On Mac
Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V Cmd+C / Cmd+V (mapped by default)
Ctrl+Alt+Del Fn+Ctrl+Option+Delete, or the app’s menu
Windows key Cmd (configurable)
Right-click Two-finger click or Ctrl+click

Keyboard mode (“Use Mac shortcuts” vs “Use Windows shortcuts”) is in the app’s settings. Pick what feels natural.

5. Share files and clipboard

  • Clipboard: text and files copy between the Mac and the VPS (enable it in the PC’s Devices & Audio settings).
  • Folders: Edit PC → Folders → add a Mac folder. It appears in Windows under “This PC” as a redirected drive. That’s handy for moving files. For large transfers, see file transfer over RDP.

6. Troubleshooting

Problem Fix
“Unable to connect” / timeout Check the IP and port, and the server’s firewall. See RDP connection errors
Error code 0x204 Network can’t reach the port: wrong port, firewall, or the server is down
“Your credentials did not work” Username format (.\Administrator), password, keyboard layout
Laggy session Lower resolution, turn off Retina optimization. See slow Remote Desktop
Black screen See RDP black screen fix

If you can’t connect at all, use the VNC console in your VPS control panel to check the server. See VPS VNC console.
