Windows Server 2025 is Microsoft’s current Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release, following Windows Server 2022. It brings a refreshed desktop experience, security hardening by default, better Active Directory, faster storage and networking features, and hotpatching for fewer reboots. Here’s what matters if you run Windows on a VPS.
Highlights
| Area | What’s new |
|---|---|
| Updates | Hotpatching (install many security updates without rebooting), available via Azure Arc for on-premises/VPS servers, as a paid subscription |
| Desktop | Windows 11-style interface, better RDP experience, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support (for physical hardware) |
| Security | Stronger defaults: SMB signing required, LDAP channel binding, NTLM deprecation steps, Credential Guard on supported hardware, TLS 1.3 everywhere |
| Networking | SMB over QUIC in all editions (file shares over UDP/443 without VPN), network ATC, improved software-defined networking |
| Active Directory | New functional level, 32k database page size option, performance and scalability improvements |
| Storage | NVMe performance improvements, Storage Spaces Direct updates, deduplication for ReFS |
| Hyper-V | GPU partitioning, larger VM limits, live migration improvements |
| Containers | Smaller images and better Windows container portability |
Support lifecycle
LTSC releases get about 5 years of mainstream support plus 5 years of extended support. Windows Server 2025 is supported into the mid-2030s, which makes it the best choice for new long-lived deployments. Windows Server 2019 is already in extended support (security updates only), and Windows Server 2022 will follow. Check Microsoft’s lifecycle pages for exact dates.
Editions
- Standard: most VPS and small business workloads.
- Datacenter: unlimited virtualization rights and advanced features, mainly for virtualization hosts.
- Datacenter: Azure Edition: Azure and Azure Local only.
Both Standard and Datacenter come in Server Core (no GUI) and Desktop Experience variants. See Server Core vs Desktop Experience.
Should you upgrade?
Choose 2025 for new servers, unless an application isn’t certified for it yet. Check with vendors of trading platforms, accounting software, line-of-business apps and SQL Server versions.
Existing 2019/2022 servers: in-place upgrades are supported (2019 → 2025, and 2022 → 2025), but a fresh install plus migration is cleaner, especially on a VPS:
- Deploy a new VPS with Windows Server 2025 (or reinstall a test VPS). See reinstall the OS.
- Install and configure your applications.
- Migrate data, and test.
- Switch DNS or clients over, and keep the old server as a fallback for a while.
If you do upgrade in place, take a full backup first, and check free disk space (an upgrade needs plenty).
Windows Server 2025 on VPS.DO
Windows VPS plans offer Windows Server 2025, 2022 and 2019 in every location, on plans with at least 50 GB of disk. Servers start on Windows Server’s free 180-day evaluation licence. You activate your own licence when it ends. See Windows VPS and Windows Server activation.
First steps after deploying
- Rename the server, set the timezone, and install updates. See Windows Server initial setup (most steps are the same in 2025).
- Change the RDP port, or restrict RDP by IP, and enable account lockout. See change the RDP port and RDP brute-force protection.
- Configure Windows Firewall. See Windows Server firewall with PowerShell.
- Set up backups. See Windows Server Backup.
