Windows Server is licensed software. On many VPS platforms, including VPS.DO, Windows Server is installed as the evaluation edition, which runs fully featured for 180 days. Before it expires, you activate your own licence. This guide explains how to check the status, convert the evaluation to a licensed edition, and fix common activation errors.

Licensing terms are set by Microsoft. Make sure your licence type allows use on the hardware or service you run it on, and check with Microsoft or your licence reseller if unsure.

Check your current status

slmgr /dlv # detailed licence info: edition, status, remaining time
slmgr /xpr # expiration date
Get-ComputerInfo -Property WindowsProductName, OsVersion
DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition

An evaluation installation shows an edition such as ServerStandardEval or ServerDatacenterEval, with a time-based licence.

What happens when the evaluation expires

After the evaluation period, Windows shows activation warnings, and the server shuts down periodically (roughly every hour). Plan the activation before the deadline, especially for production servers.

Convert evaluation to a licensed edition

Evaluation editions can’t take a retail or volume key directly. Convert them with DISM, using your product key:

DISM /Online /Get-TargetEditions
DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula
  • Use ServerDatacenter for a Datacenter key.
  • The conversion requires a reboot (sometimes two). Schedule a maintenance window.
  • Run it from an elevated PowerShell or command prompt.
  • Back up first, and make sure you have enough free disk space.

After the reboot, activate if it doesn’t happen automatically:

slmgr /ato
slmgr /dlv

Activating a non-evaluation installation

If the installation is already a retail or volume edition, just install the key and activate:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato

(Settings → System → Activation offers the same, on Desktop Experience.)

Which licence do you need?

  • Standard covers most VPS uses (web servers, applications, RDP use within the limits below).
  • Datacenter is for virtualization-heavy hosts. It’s rarely needed inside a VPS.
  • Windows Server licensing is core-based, with minimums per server. Your reseller can tell you what’s required for your vCPU count.
  • Remote Desktop: Windows Server allows two simultaneous administrative sessions. More users, or non-admin desktop use, require RDS CALs. See RDS CAL licensing and RDP multiple sessions.

Common activation errors

Error Meaning / fix
0xC004F069 “The product SKU is not found” Evaluation edition: convert with DISM Set-Edition first
0xC004C003 Key blocked or invalid. Check the key with your reseller
0xC004F050 Invalid product key for this edition. Use a Standard key for Standard, etc.
0x8007232B “DNS name does not exist” A volume key expecting a KMS server. Use a MAK/retail key, or configure KMS
No internet activation Check outbound HTTPS; or use phone activation (slui 4)

Plan the timeline

  • Day 1: note the expiry date (slmgr /xpr) in your calendar.
  • Well before expiry: buy the licence, and schedule a maintenance window for the DISM conversion and reboot.
  • After activation: confirm with slmgr /dlv that the status is “Licensed”.

Good practice

  • Record the licence and key details in your documentation (secure password manager).
  • If you reinstall the OS from the control panel, you’ll start with a fresh evaluation, and need to convert and activate again. See reinstall the OS.
  • Avoid “activators” and cracked keys. They’re illegal, and a common source of malware.

Quick reference

Task Command
Status slmgr /dlv, slmgr /xpr
Current edition DISM /Online /Get-CurrentEdition
Eval → Standard DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:… /AcceptEula
Install key slmgr /ipk <key>
Activate slmgr /ato
